Youth Protest on August 1st in Nigeria?

Nigerian youth have organized a statewide nonviolent demonstration from August 1 to 10, 2024 in response to the difficulties and worrisome situation of inadequate infrastructure, financial instability and hunger. Their goals include creating a more equitable society through better governance, improved food access, hunger eradication, and lower living expenses. The movement seeks to address crucial concerns such as economic hardships, insecurity, and power shortages. These obstacles have led individuals to band together and seek a better future for themselves and future generations. The demonstration demands immediate federal intervention to create jobs, improve security, and address the root causes of instability and power outages in the country. 

Is Protest Legal in Nigeria?

Nigeria is a democratic state that upholds the constitution. Democracy allows citizens to pick their leaders through votes and elections. According to the 40th section regarding the 1999 Constitution. Every citizen is granted the right to freely interact and gather with fellow citizens. Although there have always been numerous bridges to demonstrations in Nigeria, security agencies have an inclination to arrest and dehumanize civilians during these civil acts.

Protest in Lagos Today

 Today, in Lagos, there are demonstrations about economic hardship and soaring food costs. These protests are fueled by residents’ disenchantment and calls for change. Labor unions and members of the Nigeria Labour Congress have come to the streets to protest the present economic climate. They are asking the federal government to initiate action to solve the difficulties that ordinary Nigerians confront. The protests are intended to raise awareness and advocate for changes that benefit the people.
