Governor Umaru Bags Caught on Camera Ordering Assault on Islamic Cleric During Fidau Prayer

In a frightening video, Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago is shown ordering his security detail to physically abuse an Islamic preacher. The event occurred during the three-day Fidau prayer for his deputy’s late wife, Hajiya Zainab Yakubu Garba, who died after a brief illness in Minna.

The Fidau prayer, a specific rite offered three, seven, or forty days after the death of a Muslim believer, became contentious when the priest volunteered to conduct the prayers. Governor Bago addressed sympathizers, stating that prayers for the deceased might be held at local mosques. However, when the anonymous priest came up, the governor’s tone altered drastically.
o you? “Are you an imam?” Governor Bago snapped at the clergyman. He then directed security people to take action: “smack him, smack him very hard. Oya, go arrest him, deal with him properly, and bring him back.”

Amidst screams and acclaim from the audience, the governor said cryptically, “Everybody should be careful with me because I can be both sweet and bitter at the same time.” The episode has aroused debate and highlighted concerns about the governor’s conduct on a serious occasion12.
As the video travels, Nigerians are left to consider the consequences of such behavior by a public official, particularly during a religious service intended to memorialize the deceased. The event highlights the importance of accountability and respect for all people, regardless of their job or affiliation.

Governor Bago’s remarks and actions have sparked a heated controversy, with requests for an investigation into the incident. As the narrative progresses, Nigerians await additional developments and hope that justice will triumph.
